Beowulf is often regarded as the first poem ever written in English – albeit Old English at that. Written between 700 and 1,000 A.D., the story is set in Scandinavia and tells the story of Beowulf, a Geats hero (modern day Götaland in Sweden) who slays the monster Grendel, and his mother, saving the hall of Hrothgar, King of the Danes. He then takes on a dragon before dying in the battle to vanquish the dragon.
Pragmatic Play have tried to take on that epic tale in their Beowulf slot machine game, and to be perfectly fair, they’ve not done a terribly good job at bringing across the story, and for one reason – the graphics.
Developers
Pragmatic Play have tried to make their Beowulf slot machine as friendly as possible, hence the big and bold wagering options. Beowulf is primitive in the sense that Pragmatic Play have chosen to fill the reels with so many playing card suit symbols when they should have been treating us to more thematic imagery.
Most of the symbols are Norse in nature, but the longboats, horn cups, and rings tell more of a stereotypical, run-of-the-mill and generic Viking themed slot than the epic saga we know as Beowulf. Yes, this is only Beowulf in name.

Features
Wild symbols: Wilds appear as green emblems. There is an easy way to tell just what this symbol is supposed to be. The icon can substitute for all other symbols save for scatters. It does not offer cash prizes of its own.
Beowulf symbols: Beowulf is the best paying symbols in the slot, as well as a trigger symbol. If 4 stacked Beowulf symbols appear on the reels, you will trigger a Super Re-Spin Feature.
Super Re-Spin feature: Once the Super Re-spin feature begins, only empty spaces and Beowulf icons will sit on the reels. Players get 3 re-spins and additional re-spins can be won when additional Beowulf icons are struck during the feature. If you can fill all the reels with Beowulf icons, you can win the top prize in the game.
Scatter icons: Scatter icons appear as sword and shield symbols. If you can land 3, 4 or 5 such symbols in any position on the screen, you will land 1x, 5x, or 25x your total bet, as well as trigger a free spins bonus feature.
Free spins bonus: Players will begin the free spins feature with a total of 10, 15, or 20 free games, depending on whether they landed 3, 4 or 5 scatters on the reels. Free spins can be retriggered, and the Super Re-Spin feature can be triggered during this bonus game, too.
Maximum payouts
As we’ve said, Beowulf is the best-paying symbols in this slot. Ordinarily, you can win 2,500 coins by landing 5 Beowulf icons on a payline. However, during the Super Re-spin feature, if you can land Beowulf stacked across all 5 reels, you will win a non-progressive jackpot which is worth 100,000x your line bet.
Beowulf Slot Machine
Summary
Beowulf has nifty enough features, but its theme does not do justice to the epic saga itself. The imagery is woefully disappointing. There is no Grendel, no monsters, no dragons, and no energy in the imagery.
There are other Beowulf-themed slots out there on the net and ones with far more thematic imagery than has been conjured up for this release. To summarize, Beowulf is decent in features, but poor in imagery. The real question is; what matters most to you?
